Stanley Park is a 1,000-acre public park that situated at the northwestern edge of downtown Vancouver. The public park is almost entirely surrounded by waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay.
Unlike other large urban parks, Stanley Park is not the creation of a landscape architect, but rather the evolution of a forest and urban space over many years. The park was originally used by indigenous peoples for thousand years until it was colonized by the British Empire.
Most of the park remains as densely forested as it was in the late 1800s, with about a half million trees. Significant effort was put into constructing the Vancouver seawall, which can attract thousands of residences and visitors to the park every day, and 8 million visitors each year. Stanley Park features forest trails, beaches, lakes, children’s play areas and Vancouver Aquarium. This 1000-acre park is recognized as one of the greatest urban parks in the world. In 2014, Stanley Park was named ‘Top Park in the Entire World’ by TripAdvisor!
As Vancouver’s first park, Stanley Park has continued to live up to its “greenspace” designation for more than 120 years. For these reasons and more, this tranquil oasis is the perfect city escape.
